Drive-Away Dolls is directed by one half of the Coen Brothers (specifically Ethan) and is about two friends (Jamie and Marian) on a road trip to Tallahassee, but are being pursued by two mobsters as they are unwittingly in the possession of a very important briefcase.
Based on the Coen brothers’ previous filmography, I thought this would be another, but I walked out feeling disappointed with this one. I had fun with it in moments, but the story felt undeveloped and when it ended quite quickly, I just felt unfulfilled. It’s a movie with a premise that sounds very entertaining, but just didn’t do much with it.
Perhaps the most egregious element of this were some of the editing choices - particularly with the transitions and chosen sound effects and it just wasn’t good. It felt like someone was discovering those for the first time and wanted to dump them in at every possible opportunity, giving the movie a very amateurish quality and not the quirky one I think it was going for.
This is a very short movie that clocks in at around one hour and 20 minutes before the credits and could’ve used a little more time to put some meat on the bone. It’s simultaneously not long enough but thankfully brief.

Speaking of boning, there’s a lot of it going on here. This is a very horny movie that does successfully give us a pair of lesbian characters that have good chemistry together and is generally quite sex positive. Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan make for a watchable duo who are finding themselves as well as exploring their sexuality to the point this could be considered soft porn.

The reveal of what’s inside the suitcase caught me off guard and it was certainly unique contents. This macguffin relates strongly to Pedro Pascal’s and Matt Damon’s characters who are in the movie combined for a total of maybe three minutes. If you’ve seen the trailer, you’ve pretty much scene their appearance here.
Overall I did get some entertainment out of this at times, but it’s mostly slow with little plot development, unfocused script and isn’t really as funny as the trailers made it look. There’s some positives like the two leads but I definitely expected better from a Coen Brother. Maybe it’s just a movie that isn’t going to mean as much to a heterosexual male, so maybe it’ll resonate more with members of the LGBT community.
