DUNE PART 2: The Awaited Return to the Desert Planet!

I love when a movie comes along and rewards everybody with the same appreciation for great movies and cinematic events. Very rarely can we experience peace within the film community, but it should hopefully be sometimes before people are able to pick their jaws up off of the floor. There’s a lot of overwhelmingly positive reviews out there for Denis Villeneuve’s second half of his adaption of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel and it makes the 2021 Part 1 look lackluster in comparison. I rewatched Part 1 earlier this week in preparation for this, as I’m sure many others did. On my initial viewing back when it was released I didn’t love it and found the density of the material difficult to get into, but subsequent viewings have improved my outlook considerably. Any issues I have with this one would be similar the first film in that there are part where it does slow down just a little more than it should. Even then I still felt like I could’ve continued watching this for a bit longer. I know tha...

SOMETIMES I THINK ABOUT DYING (2024) REVIEW

Sometimes I Think about Dying is a very beautiful and impactful romance drama staring Daisy Ridley as an office worker called Fran, who is very shut off from life, avoiding human interaction and often pictures herself as if she had perished. A new employee at her job, Dave Merheje as Robert, starts to bring her into the world more as she develops feelings for him. The backdrop to this melancholic lens on this lonely character is the symbolism of the small and forgotten town drenched in a lot of gray and muted colours. Daisy Ridley is just excellent here as a person who is quite mysterious, avoids social interaction and is very quiet. We don’t hear her speak for a good 20 minutes into this and through all that time she perfectly conveys her character’s feelings through body language, facial expressions and brevity with others. Until then, we’re seeing life from her viewpoint. There are plenty of fixed camera shots of repetitive and mundane things happening and uninteresting conversation...

MADAME WEB (2024) REVIEW & Star Cast

Sony’s not at all misguided and hugely beloved Spider-Man-less cinematic universe continues with its most well-crafted and inspirational entry yet with Madame Web (film) . For years now, the anticipation for this movie has been exceedingly high and now that it’s spun onto cinema screens, it seems as if all our dreams have been answered. If sarcasm isn’t your thing then maybe that opening paragraph might have got you excited for one of the best entries in the genre, and for that I do apologise. Unlike Dakota Johnson’s titular character here, Cassie Webb, the filmmakers clearly didn’t have clairvoyant abilities because they would’ve looked ahead and decided against making this soulless and lazy attempt at cashing in on the Marvel brand. To be a little fair to it, I’ll give any movie a point that uses Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’ for an action sequence because I appreciate when the classics are used, but I don’t really have much else good to say beyond that. I haven’t seen one positive review ...
