Spooky Sips: Witches Brew Halloween Cocktail Recipe

You know me and my cocktail loving self just had to come up with a spooky Halloween drink. This cocktail is simple and effortlessly fashionable, I mean just look at that color. These will be a hit at your next party (or just on the couch watching Halloween films, Y’all know that’s my Saturday night). These drinks are the perfect cocktail trio: light, sweet, and a bit bubbly.

This cocktail is flavored with Midori (a Japanese honeydew melon liqueur), lime sherbert, and lemon-lime soda. It is a pretty sweet cocktail compared to what I normally post since I like more fresh flavors and don’t eat a ton of sugar (but they are probably average compared to most cocktails). There is also vodka added for more of an alcohol kick (Midori is only 20%).

I feel like Halloween cocktails are all about the look and the taste is a bit of an afterthought. I kept looking through other Halloween drinks for inspiration (and because I didn’t want to make something that has been created over and over again) and some of them sounded straight nasty. It seems as though the color and look take precedence over how it tastes (which is a whole rant on its own about the food industry). But this cocktail has both so y’know, it’s the best. But in all seriousness, this drink is fantastic, it’s bright green, a bit creamy from the sherbert, and the lime brightens up what would otherwise be sickly sweet Midori, it’s just an overall good drink.

How to Recreate the Look

Now, as I mentioned earlier, one really important part of Halloween cocktails is how they look, so let’s talk about how to achieve the exact same thing you’re seeing in the photos (I ain’t trying to pull no photoshop magic on all of you, I ain’t got the time nor the energy for that).

Wooden Stick Stirrer

The two three things that are essential for this drink to look like a witch’s brew are the green color (thank you Midori), the foam, and the stick stirrers. So really, besides what’s naturally happening when you make the drink, all that’s left are the little wood looking stick stirrers (they are actually plastic). I got my stirrer sticks at Walmart but they are by Wilton so you may be able to find them at craft/hobby stores or purchase online. Their intended purpose was as a stick for candied/caramel apples, but I saw them and instantly thought cocktail stirrer (which I think they are perfect for). Here is a link to them on Walmart’s website (since that’s where I got em).

If you can’t get your hands on these particular stirrers, I think a black or wooden stirrer would have a good effect and be a nice touch to the drink.

Glasses

I chose stemless wine glasses because they are very bulbous in shape and sorta replicate a cauldron. You could also get a black glass or a glass that has a black colored bottom to sorta bring the black of a cauldron onto the drink (I couldn’t do this because it wouldn’t show up on pictures very well). However, really any drinking glass would do.

Foam

One essential part of this drink is the foam, it really makes it look spooky. The foam will naturally occur when you pour the lemon-lime soda over the sherbert, however, it will react like a root beer float (basically the same concept), so pour slowly and add lemon-lime soda a little at a time. Gently stirring it after the initial foam can help the bubbles settle and then allow you to add more lemon-lime soda. If you are having an excess of foam, you can scoop off the extra into a bowl/the sink to help get more room, but the foam does calm down rapidly after a minute and then sorta sticks around in a thin layer after that.

Spider Web Doilies

This isn’t really necessary for the look of the drink, but I wanted to talk about where I got them in case you like them. These again are Wilton branded (not spons, promise), and I picked them up at Walmart.

Recipe

A glowing green cocktail made with Midori, lime sherbert, and a bit of lemon-lime soda for foam. A perfect Witches Brew.

For instructions on how to make this recipe for a crowd, see below the recipe. For how to replicate the look of this drink and where to find the wooden stirrers, see above.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz Midori
  • 1/2 oz Vodka
  • 1/4 cup lime sherbert
  • 6 oz (1/2 can) lemon-lime soda
  • wooden stir stick for garnish (see above for more info)

Directions

1. Add alcohol and sherbert. In the glass of your choice, add in the Midori, vodka, and lime sherbert and give a stir to combine and to soften the lime sherbert (but doesn’t have to be melted).

2. Add lemon-lime soda. Add in the soda slowly and stir with a spoon as you do so (will help with the foaming) after about half the soda is in or when it becomes full with foam, stop adding soda. Let the drink sit for about a minute while you stir and the bubbles should calm down a lot. Continue to add the soda slowly until it is all in, then stop stirring and let the foam be (it’s part of the aesthetic).

3. GarnishAdd in wood stir stick, wipe off the edge of the glass with a dry paper towel if dirty.

4. Enjoy! Take some pictures for Instagram, guzzle, and remake (drink responsibly and don’t make stupid decisions, just because you’re a sexy witch doesn’t mean you can evade the law 😉 )
